This awesome sketch art card of Gbadu from African Mythology is drawn by the very talented artist Newton Barbosa :iconnewtonb: for our Classic Mythology III trading card set.

Gbadu - "Holy Daughter": Gbadu is the daughter of Mawu. She is the Goddess of Fate of the Fon (or Dahomey) people of modern Benin, Who is saddened by the fighting among Her Mother's mortal children. Gbadu is the first daughter of Mawu and Lisa. Gbadu is the one who helps keep the world under control.

Gbadu has sixteen eyes and she lives on top of a palm tree in the sky, so she can observe the kingdoms of the earth, sea and sky. She is always in the tree and she never comes down. During the night, when she sleeps, all her eyes close. However, come morning, she cannot open them herself, thus relying on her brother Legba to do this for her.

When Legba climbs the tree in the morning, he asks which eyes she wants to open that day. Gbadu will not vocally answer to his questions, out of fear that others might overhear. Thus, she places a corn kernel in the palm of his hand. If she places two kernels, then she wishes for a single pair of eyes to open and one means two pairs of eyes.

After he completes his task, Legba also sits along with his sister and gazes to see what happens in the sea and on Earth. And so, that is the way that things are for the two siblings. One day, Legba tells his sister that there is a great war in all of the three kingdoms. This is because the people do not know the language of their parent and argue constantly.

Mawu gave Gbadu the keys to the future. Legend says it is a house with sixteen doors, each one corresponding to one of her the deity’s eyes. Thus, she became the mediator between humans and gods, holding the keys to their future. When people wanted to know their future, they held a corn kernel in their hand and offered prayers for guidance.
